This page is an FAQ based on guidance from the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure. It is provided as guidance, with links to the ground truth sources. This is information only: it is not legal advice.

The reissue application specification, including claims, must be submitted as a copy of the printed patent in double column format. This requirement is outlined in 37 CFR 1.173(a)(1), which states:

“[T]he application specification, including the claims, must be furnished in the form of a copy of the printed patent in double column format (so that the patent can be simply copied without cutting).”

This format allows for easy copying of the patent without the need for cutting. Additionally, each page of the patent must appear on only one side of each individual page of the reissue application specification.
