How is the classification of a new patent application determined?

The classification of a new patent application is determined when it is received at a Technology Center. This classification is an important step in the patent examination process as it helps route the application to the appropriate examining group and aids in prior art searches.

According to MPEP § 719.03, When a new application is received in a Technology Center, the classification of the application […] [is] noted in the application file.

The classification is based on the subject matter of the invention and follows the United States Patent Classification (USPC) system or the Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) system. For more detailed information on classification practices, refer to MPEP § 903 on Classification.
