This page is an FAQ based on guidance from the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure. It is provided as guidance, with links to the ground truth sources. This is information only: it is not legal advice.

A “Printer Rush” occurs when issues need to be addressed after a patent application has been allowed but before it can be published. As stated in MPEP 1309.02:

“A printer rush occurs when document(s) need to be addressed after a patent application has been allowed. The file is returned to the examiner, a ‘Printer Rush’ form is included in the Image File Wrapper (IFW) and is indicated with a ‘RUSH’ document code, noting the issue.”

These cases are prioritized for immediate action by the examiner to resolve any outstanding issues that could prevent publication.
