What is prioritized examination and how does it work?

Prioritized examination, also known as Track One, is a program that allows applicants to request expedited examination of their patent applications. According to the MPEP, Under prioritized examination, an application will be accorded special status until a final disposition is reached in the application. The goal for handling applications under prioritized examination is to provide, on average, a final disposition within twelve months of prioritized status being granted.

To participate in the program, applicants must meet specific requirements and pay additional fees. The program is available for original utility and plant applications filed under 35 U.S.C. 111(a), as well as for requests for continued examination (RCEs) in certain cases.
