This page is an FAQ based on guidance from the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure. It is provided as guidance, with links to the ground truth sources. This is information only: it is not legal advice.

When a new patent application is received in a Technology Center, two key actions are taken:

  1. The classification of the application is noted in the application file.
  2. The initials or name of the examiner who will examine the application, or other assigned docket designation, are recorded in the file.

As stated in MPEP § 719.03: When a new application is received in a Technology Center, the classification of the application and the initials or name of the examiner who will examine it or other assigned docket designation are noted in the application file.

This process helps in organizing and tracking patent applications within the USPTO system.
