How are amendments after notice of allowance processed by the USPTO?

Amendments after notice of allowance are processed through several steps at the USPTO. According to MPEP 714.16(d):

  1. Amendments are sent to the Office of Patent Application Processing (OPAP) for scanning and uploading into the IFW.
  2. OPAP messages the Office of Data Management, which reviews the message.
  3. The message is forwarded to the Technology Center (TC) that allowed the application.
  4. The TC completes the action and messages the Office of Data Management that issue processing can resume.

The examiner then considers the amendment and recommends whether to enter it, enter it in part, or not enter it. For amendments affecting the disclosure, adding claims, or changing claim scope, approval from a supervisory patent examiner is required.
