The three main groupings of abstract ideas are:

  • Mathematical concepts
  • Certain methods of organizing human activity
  • Mental processes

As stated in MPEP 2106.04(a)(2): “The abstract idea groupings are defined as mathematical relationships, mathematical formulas or equations, and mathematical calculations (mathematical concepts); fundamental economic principles or practices, commercial or legal interactions, and managing personal behavior or relationships or interactions between people (certain methods of organizing human activity); and mental processes (concepts performed in the human mind).”
