What are CPC Definitions and why are they important?

CPC Definitions are essential components of the Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) system that provide clarity and guidance for patent classification. According to the MPEP 905.02, “CPC definitions, whether it is a subclass, main group, or subgroup definition, must adhere to the same definition template which defines the permissible elements and formatting.”

These definitions are important because they:

  • Clarify the scope of classification places
  • Inform users of special classification rules
  • Provide supplementary information to enhance understanding of the classification scheme

It’s worth noting that “Definitions are provided for CPC subclasses, main groups or subgroups, but not for CPC sections or classes.”
