This page is an FAQ based on guidance from the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure. It is provided as guidance, with links to the ground truth sources. This is information only: it is not legal advice.
According to MPEP 1820, an international patent application must be signed by the applicant(s). Specifically:
“Pursuant to PCT Rule 4.15, the international application must be signed in Box No. X of the request by the applicant, or, where there are two or more applicants, by all of them.”
However, it’s important to note that:
“Under PCT Rule 26.2bis, it is sufficient for purposes of PCT Article 14(1)(a)(i) that the application is signed by only one of the applicants.”
