The “predictability of the art” is a crucial factor in assessing enablement under 35 U.S.C. 112(a). According to MPEP 2164.01:

“The amount of guidance or direction needed to enable the invention is inversely related to the amount of knowledge in the state of the art as well as the predictability in the art.”

This means that in unpredictable arts, such as biotechnology or chemistry, more detailed guidance may be necessary to satisfy the enablement requirement. Conversely, in predictable arts like mechanical or electrical engineering, less guidance might be needed. Examiners must consider this factor when evaluating whether a specification provides sufficient enablement for the claimed invention.
