According to MPEP 608.01(b) : The abstract is a brief narrative of the disclosure as a whole, as concise as the disclosure permits, in a single paragraph preferably not exceeding 150 words, commencing on a separate sheet following the claims. While 150 words is the preferred maximum length, the MPEP also notes that the abstract should be as concise as the disclosure permits . This means that if the invention can be adequately summarized in fewer words, a shorter abstract is acceptable and even encouraged.
