This page is an FAQ based on guidance from the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure. It is provided as guidance, with links to the ground truth sources. This is information only: it is not legal advice.
According to MPEP 2906, international design applications must be filed in one of three prescribed languages:
- English
- French
- Spanish
The MPEP specifically states: “The prescribed languages, set forth in Hague Agreement Rule 6, are English, French, and Spanish.“
It’s crucial to note that using one of these languages is a requirement for obtaining a filing date. If an application is not in one of these languages, it will be considered an irregularity that may postpone the filing date until the issue is corrected.
