What is the purpose of the file reference in a PCT application?
The file reference in a PCT application serves as a unique identifier for the applicant or their agent. According to MPEP 1821:
“The applicant or his/her agent may indicate a file reference in the box provided for this purpose on the first sheet of the Request form, on each page of the other elements of the international application, on the first sheet of the demand form, and in any other correspondence relating to the international application.“
Key points about the file reference:
- It may consist of letters of the Latin alphabet, Arabic numerals, or both
- It must not exceed 25 characters including spaces
- If it exceeds 25 characters, the receiving Office may truncate it
- It is used by various authorities in correspondence with the applicant
