This page is an FAQ based on guidance from the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure. It is provided as guidance, with links to the ground truth sources. This is information only: it is not legal advice.

To change the correspondence address for a pending patent application, follow these steps:

  1. Use the Office form Change of Correspondence Address, Application (PTO/SB/122).
  2. Submit the form to the USPTO, ensuring all required information is provided.
  3. Include both the application number and, if known, the filing date to expedite processing.

The MPEP advises: “To ensure accuracy and to expedite requests for change to the correspondence address, it is suggested that the request include both the patent number and the application number.” (MPEP 2542)

While this advice is given in the context of issued patents, it’s equally applicable to pending applications. Providing complete information helps prevent delays and ensures the change is applied correctly.
