This page is an FAQ based on guidance from the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure. It is provided as guidance, with links to the ground truth sources. This is information only: it is not legal advice.

Examiners should take the following precautions when conducting internet searches:

  • Use only USPTO-provided internet search tools and databases
  • Avoid entering sensitive data into non-USPTO websites
  • Be cautious of potentially offensive content

The MPEP advises: “In using the Internet, the examiner should be aware that Internet sites may contain viruses, worms, or other malicious code or content.” (MPEP 904.02(c))

These precautions help maintain the integrity of the examination process and protect sensitive information.
