The maximum period for suspension of action in a patent application is typically six months. According to MPEP 709, ‘A suspension of action under 37 CFR 1.103(a)-(d) is limited to a period not exceeding 6 months.’ However, in exceptional circumstances, the Director may grant an additional suspension for up to 6 months upon petition by the applicant showing sufficient cause.
