What happens if Priority Mail Express® is returned to the USPTO as undeliverable?

If Priority Mail Express® sent by the USPTO is returned by the USPS as undeliverable, the USPTO will retain the returned item and the envelope. According to MPEP 513:

If any Priority Mail Express® sent by the Office to a patent applicant is returned to the Office as undeliverable, the Office will retain the returned item and the envelope containing the same in the file of the application or patent.

This means that the USPTO will keep a record of the attempted delivery in the relevant application or patent file. It’s important for applicants to ensure their address information is up-to-date to avoid missed communications.
