The “Sequence Listing XML” file must use Unicode UTF-8 character encoding. According to MPEP 2413.02:
“In order for the USPTO to be able to process the .xml file containing the “Sequence Listing XML”, all characters must be encoded using Unicode UTF-8.“
This requirement ensures that the file can be properly read and processed by USPTO systems. Unicode UTF-8 encoding supports a wide range of characters and is the standard for XML files in many applications, including patent submissions.
