What are the technical requirements for reproductions submitted through EFS-Web?
This page is an FAQ based on guidance from the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure. It is provided as guidance, with links to the ground truth sources. This is information only: it is not legal advice.
The MPEP 2909.02(a) outlines several technical requirements for reproductions submitted through EFS-Web:
- File formats: PDF or JPEG
- File size: Maximum 2 megabytes for files attached via the “Attach Reproductions” section
- PDF restrictions: Only single-page PDFs are allowed in the “Attach Reproductions” section
- JPEG warnings: EFS-Web provides warnings for issues with resolution, minimum and maximum dimensions
- Additional requirements: The MPEP states:
“Technical requirements regarding image files, such as resolution, minimum and maximum image size, border width, etc., are also set forth on the website of the International Bureau at www.wipo.int/hague/en/hague_file_renew.html.”
It’s crucial to note that while EFS-Web checks some requirements, it doesn’t verify all. The MPEP emphasizes: “It is the responsibility of applicants to ensure that reproductions satisfy all applicable requirements.”
