What are the requirements for correcting drawings in a patent application?
According to MPEP 608.02(p), the requirements for correcting drawings in a patent application are:
- Corrections must be made on copies of the original drawings if filed on paper or on a copy of the drawings if filed electronically.
- Changes should be made in black ink or its equivalent.
- Corrections must be made on all copies of the drawings.
- All changes to the drawings must be explained in detail in the remarks section of the amendment paper.
- No new matter may be introduced in the required correction.
The MPEP states: “Any changes to an application drawing must be in compliance with § 1.84 and must be submitted on a replacement sheet of drawings which shall be an attachment to the amendment document and, in the top margin, labeled “Replacement Sheet.”” This ensures that the corrections are properly documented and incorporated into the application.
