Supplemental examination papers must adhere to specific formatting requirements as outlined in MPEP 2806:

  • Follow the guidelines in 37 CFR 1.52 for paper size, writing, margins, and other general formatting.
  • Comply with 37 CFR 1.72(b) for the abstract format on a separate sheet.
  • Use a top margin of at least 2 cm (3/4 inch) on the first page.
  • Include a heading with “Mail Stop Supplemental Examination” on the first page.
  • Clearly mark all papers with “SUPPLEMENTAL EXAMINATION.”

The MPEP states: “All papers filed in a supplemental examination proceeding must be formatted in accordance with 37 CFR 1.52 and 37 CFR 1.72(b).” Proper formatting ensures efficient processing and examination of your supplemental examination request.
