This page is an FAQ based on guidance from the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure. It is provided as guidance, with links to the ground truth sources. This is information only: it is not legal advice.
Electronic submission of sequence listings for patent applications is the preferred method according to MPEP 2420. The process involves:
- Preparing the sequence listing in compliance with WIPO Standard ST.25.
- Submitting the sequence listing as a separate text file (*.txt).
- Ensuring the file is encoded in ASCII text.
- Using the USPTO’s electronic filing system (EFS-Web or Patent Center) for submission.
The MPEP states: “If possible, applicants should submit their sequence listings via EFS-Web or Patent Center as a text file (.txt) coded in ASCII rather than as a PDF file.” This method facilitates more efficient processing and examination of the application.
For specific instructions on electronic filing, applicants should refer to the USPTO’s current guidelines and the EFS-Web or Patent Center user manuals.
