How are classes and subclasses identified in the USPC?

This page is an FAQ based on guidance from the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure. It is provided as guidance, with links to the ground truth sources. This is information only: it is not legal advice.

According to MPEP 902.01, classes and subclasses in the USPC are identified as follows:

“Each class has a title descriptive of its subject matter, is identified by a class number, and is subdivided into a number of subclasses. Each subclass also has a descriptive title, is identified by a subclass number, and the subclass number is an integral number that may contain a decimal portion and/or alpha characters.”

For example, a complete subclass identification might look like 417/161.1A, where 417 is the class number and 161.1A is the subclass number.
