What are the requirements for shading in design patent drawings?
Shading in design patent drawings is an important aspect of accurately representing the design. According to MPEP 2909.02:
“Surface shading should be used to show the character or contour of the surfaces.”
This means that shading should be used to clearly depict the three-dimensional aspects of the design. The MPEP further states:
“Solid black surface shading is not permitted except when used to represent the color black as well as color contrast.”
