What are “Large Tables” and how should they be submitted in a patent application?

“Large Tables” are defined in 37 CFR 1.58(c) as:

  • Any individual table that is more than 50 pages in length, or
  • Multiple tables, if the total number of pages of all the tables in an application exceeds 100 pages in length

Large Tables should be submitted as ASCII plain text files via the USPTO patent electronic filing system or on read-only optical disc. The specification must include an incorporation by reference statement for the Large Tables file.

As stated in MPEP 608.05(b): When submitting “Large Tables” as ASCII plain text files, each table should be submitted as a separate text file. Further, the file name for each table should indicate which table is contained therein.
