How should translations of text in drawings be handled for PCT applications entering the U.S. national stage?

When translating text contained in drawings for PCT applications entering the U.S. national stage, applicants have two options according to the MPEP:

“A translation of words contained in the drawings must be furnished either in the form of new drawings or in the form of a copy of the original drawings with the translation pasted on the original text matter. See PCT Rule 49.5(d).”

To comply with this requirement, applicants can choose one of the following methods:

1. New drawings: Create entirely new drawings with the text translated into English.
2. Modified original drawings: Use copies of the original drawings and paste the English translation over the original text.

It’s important to note that the translation of text in drawings is a required part of the complete translation. Failing to provide translated text in drawings can result in the translation being considered incomplete and potentially lead to a Notification of Missing Requirements from the USPTO.
