What are CPC titles and how are they structured?

CPC titles are associated with classification symbols and define the scope of subject matter covered by that symbol. According to MPEP 905.01(a):

“The title associated with a CPC symbol defines the scope of the subject matter covered by that symbol. In general, the title of every CPC organizational division is read as including the titles of all its superior organizational units.”

CPC titles can be structured in two main forms:

  1. Single part title: Defines a single concept or information. Example: “A47C 1/00 Chairs adapted for special purposes”
  2. Multipart title: Separated by semicolons, covering distinct and separate information entities. Example: “F25D REFRIGERATORS; COLD ROOMS; ICE-BOXES; COOLING OR FREEZING APPARATUS NOT COVERED BY ANY OTHER SUBCLASS”

Understanding CPC titles is crucial for accurately interpreting the scope of patent classifications.
