How can I associate a previously filed international application with my customer number?
This page is an FAQ based on guidance from the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure. It is provided as guidance, with links to the ground truth sources. This is information only: it is not legal advice.
To associate a previously filed international application with your customer number, you need to submit a request to the USPTO. The request must include the following information:
- Your customer number
- The international application number
- Your registration number (if applicable)
- Signature of the applicant or attorney of record
You can use Form PTO-2248 for this purpose, which is available on the USPTO website. As stated in MPEP 1809: “Form PTO-2248 may be obtained from the USPTO website (www.uspto.gov/patents-getting-started/international-protection/patent-cooperation-treaty/pct-chapter-i-forms).”
You can submit the completed form by:
- Mailing it to: Mail Stop EBC, Commissioner for Patents, P.O. Box 1450, Alexandria, VA 22313-1450
- Faxing it to: 571-273-0177
Once processed, you’ll be able to view the status of your previously filed international application in Private PAIR.
